When an independent forester can help
- A buyer has made a timber offer. The owner needs to understand which trees are included, whether the value is supported and what the harvest would leave behind.
- A wooded property is being purchased, inherited or divided. An inventory or appraisal can inform the forestry part of the decision. Agree on the purpose, effective date and required report with the client and their adviser before fieldwork.
- A landowner is considering QFP. Parcel eligibility, existing exemptions, management obligations and a qualified forest management plan need to be considered together.
- A woodland is changing. Oak regeneration, invasive plants, habitat goals and the possible use of fire need a current site assessment and a realistic sequence of work.
About the practice
I am Brandon Baird, Michigan Registered Forester · #47097. I founded Baird Forestry in 2022 and work directly with private landowners across the southern lower peninsula of michigan, within about a two-hour drive of lansing. My background includes government FIA work with the Florida Forest Service, managing a large forest inventory for Sierra Pacific in Washington, and technology applied to forestry.
I represent the landowner in the forestry work I am retained to do. Scope, deliverables and fees are agreed before work begins. A forestry assessment can support an attorney, tax adviser, appraiser or land agent; it does not replace their advice or determine a program agency’s approval.

Start with the county, approximate acreage, the decision being considered and any real deadline. The landowner can contact me directly, or an adviser can make an introduction with their permission. Please keep contracts, tax documents, parcel identifiers and other private records out of the initial web form. If records are needed, I will coordinate how to provide them.
I reply within 24 hours. A first conversation establishes fit and the next useful step; it does not commit the owner to a timber sale or management project.
